The first settlers arrived in Hingham from England. They called it Bare Cove because the cove looked bare when
the tide was out. In 1635, Rev. Peter Hobart and his followers arrived from Hingham, England and so Bare Cove was
renamed Hingham.
Hingham has served the United States as providing camps for the army when in war. After the war, there was need for
housing and the resulting baby boom. The housing stock continued to flourished. There was a focus on acquiring land
and preserving it. This concern for the environment and quality of life remains a priority in Hingham today.
