The first settlers arrived in Hingham from England. They called it Bare Cove because the cove looked bare when the tide was out. In 1635, Rev. Peter Hobart and his followers arrived from Hingham, England and so Bare Cove was renamed Hingham.

There was a focus on acquiring land and preserving it. This concern for the environment and quality of life remains a priority in Hingham today.
